Nature of Job:
Medical Technologist or Med Tech prepares and conducts laboratory examinations such as microscopic, bacterial and chemical. They often conduct human specimen, blood, stool, saliva and urine test.
Basic Tasks:
- Conduct in depth examination on human blood and specimen.
- Make an assessment through the examination that will pass through the physician
- Study the blood, it contents and the disease that it may cause.
- Detect possible cause of disease by examining the specimen, stool, saliva and urine.
- Communicate with physicians about the examination conducted to the patient
- Keep and assure the confidentiality of the examined specimen.
- Work with a group of medical professionals in conducting researches and medical discoveries.
- Detect micro organisms living in the specimen and how it affects the body.
Education and Training Requirements:
- Must be a graduate of Medical Technology and hold authentic license
- Must have internship with private or public hospital or diagnostic clinic (for entry level applicants)
- Must have at least 2-3 years working experience.
Skills and Competency Requirements:
- Must have broad knowledge on biology and micro organisms.
- Must have experience handling rare and common cases in medical testing.
- Above average knowledge in detecting micro organisms in blood and other specimens.
- Know several of micro organisms and know the diseases it may cause.
- Ability to use microscopes and other medical tools used in the examination
- Must be accurate in conducting tests and researches.
- Ability to work in a team of medical professionals.
- Can communicate well with fellow med techs and patients.

Medical Technologists are not only in demand abroad, several local hospitals seek for the expertise of entry level and experienced Med Techs.
Overseas, neighboring Asian country like Singapore are open for Filipino Med Techs, aside from the salary, they are giving allowance as part of their competitive package.
Work Environment:
Medical Technician usually works in laboratories in Hospitals or Diagnostic clinics. They spent their whole day studying and conducting specimen examination. They often face stress whenever they are examining rare cases. Med Techs usually communicate with physicians to report their evaluation and make conclusions.
Work Hours:
The working hours of Med Tech takes 8-10 hours including overtime.
Career Advancement:
Entry level Medical Technician can be promoted as Senior Medical Technician or Head of the Laboratory Department.
