To express their protest against the alleged pork barrel scam, a coalition of progressive groups of overseas Filipinos declared September 19 as “Zero Remittance Day.” The group is urging all Filipinos that are abroad to take a stand and join them on that day to get their message across.

A group of recruitment agencies announced that they are suspending the deployment of Filipino household service workers (HSWs) to Singapore. The Association of Licensed Recruitment Agencies for Singapore (ALRAS) made this decision in an effort to force their counterpart agencies in Singapore to implement reforms and to stop charging placement fees.

Filipinos who are employed as household service workers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have a lesser chance to experience maltreatment from their employers as domestic abuse in Saudi is now considered a crime. In what is referred to as a landmark decision, government officials in Saudi recently approved the implementation of the domestic abuse law.

Data shows that there are about 6,000 Filipinos in Egypt to be repatriated. However, returning migrant workers need not worry about losing their jobs as they are assured by President Aquino that they would get jobs and livelihood assistance from the Philippine government with the help of the Labor Department, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and other government entities.
