CLOSE to eight million Filipino nurses, IT experts, domestic helpers and seafarers abroad sent 4.52 billion dollars back home in the seven months to July, an increase of six percent from 4.26 billion dollars in the same period last year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Monday.

After suspending the hiring of Filipino workers in April, Libya is partially lifting its ban on Filipino workers that was imposed due to concern over Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the Department of Foreign Affairs said on a note dated May 24.

Five countries have restricted the entry of Filipinos because of the severe acute respiratory syndrome or SARS. Taiwan requires new workers to submit a SARS-free certificate and a boarding permit from the Taiwan Economic Council Office. Returning workers are also required to submit a boarding permit but a SARS clearance is not required. All workers arriving in Taiwan will be subjected to 10-day quarantine.
