The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) informed through its website that United Arab Emirates (UAE) added another illness in their list of deportable diseases for expatriates.

Starting July 1, 2008, all foreigners applying for residency and labor visas (either first time or renewal) should prove themselves clear of the following diseases: human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis, hepatitis B and the recently added hepatitis C or else they will be deported. This law covers overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

POEA said, “The new test applies to all expatriates applying for residency and labor visas, including renewal. Anyone who tests positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV) will be deported."

The UAE is home to an estimate of 81,000 OFWs according to POEA 2005 data.
