The increase in reports of abused Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Jordan urges the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to order a partial deployment ban in the said country. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Chief Rosalinda Baldoz said that the government agency has stopped the processing of work permits for Jordan since January 22.The deployment ban does not cover Filipinos retuning to their previous employers. The public is advised to report to POEA any recruitment agency or individual offering jobs in Jordan.
No Legal jobs for Household Workers in Egypt
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Egypt is not accepting domestic helpers from other countries, including the Philippines, except those who are working for foreign diplomats. In a press statement, DFA informed that the government of Egypt only grants visa and working permits to foreign domestic helpers hired by foreign diplomats accredited to Egypt.
The Philippine embassy in Cairo said that Filipinos employed as domestic helpers in Egypt face the risk of being arrested by the Egyptian immigration authorities as they don't have valid visas and working permits. Likewise, without the necessary documents, Filipino domestic helpers in Egypt do not enjoy labor protection so are vulnerable to abuse and ill-treatment.
The Philippine embassy in Cairo appealed to Filipinos to be wary of recruiters and recruitment agencies offering jobs as domestic helpers in Egypt and to report such agencies immediately to DOLE and POEA
