Ricky (in the middle) having fun with his friends
Fate has been good for Ricky Billendo and his wife since they decided to work overseas. As former members of the military, Ricky said that they have nothing against the organization they once belong. However, their life was not that easy then especially because he and his wife were assigned in Mindanao. According to Ricky, it is difficult to build a family when both of them are soldiers.
An opportunity can come unexpectedly and in very rare places. For Ricky, it comes while watching the Discovery Channel. He saw a job advertisement and quickly sent his resume via internet. He received a call after a week and was offered a salary that is 300 times more than what he is getting in the
Philippines. Ricky’s wife also sent an application and was also hired. His wife went to Africa then Ricky and their child followed a month later. He arrived in Africa in December of 2004.
Ricky is now employed as logistics coordinator in Trinidad and Tobago and has no regrets. He works inside a US Base but what he really likes about his job are the travel perks. Through his job, he is able to visit nice places like Ethiopia, Kenya, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Stuttgart, and Dubai. Ricky feels fortunate and is grateful for all the benefits that come with his job. In his 2 and ½ years of working, he learned a lot in areas of aviation and logistics.
In spite of all the good things he and his family are enjoying abroad, Ricky says he still misses the Philippines very much. For him, the Philippines is incomparable as it is his home. He said that no matter where life takes him, he would remain a true Filipino at heart.
His message to all OFWs around the world…Be the best of whatever you are and always be on the lookout for opportunities because it will knock only once.
