POEA Guides Aspiring OFWs
Dec 22, 2006
As part of the agency's commitment and duty to the nation and the Filipino people, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) regularly conducts a Pre-employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS). The seminar is given by POEA officials and aims to educate aspiring OFWS about the legal and right process of seeking work out of the country.
The PEOS also includes two film showing presentations with a lecture and a brief answer and question session The first film showing features the three different ways (agency hired, name hired, and government placement branch) to find work abroad using the legal process. Tips on how to avoid being victimized by illegal recruiters by providing insights on how unlicensed agencies operate are also shown. The second video shows cases of women who were victims of human smuggling. It is a powerful and moving presentation as different women recall and share their unfortunate experiences. Some women were maltreated by their employers while others failed to receive any compensation for their labor.
Summing it up, the two documentaries and the whole lecture shows the pros and cons of overseas employment as it features successful OFWS as well as unsuccessful ones. The PEOS stresses the importance of thorough preparation and weighing of the benefits and disadvantages before one decides to leave the country and seek their luck elsewhere.
