Mayor Ping S. Cuerpo of Montalban, Rizal has proven himself being resourceful for being the first to launch among local government in the country a work-abroad-now-pay-later program.
This is a special program that finances constituents to purse their dream of working in abroad.
"This is some sort of a work-abroad-now, pay-later livelihood assistance to my constituents, Cuerpo explained.”Our municipality will be providing or granting loans to those who could meet the required qualifications to work abroad."
"In short, our municipality will be helping them find jobs abroad under our financial assistance scheme," added Cuerpo.
Mayor Cuerpo explained that his office will set committees to further train and monitor skills development of those who want to work abroad. The purpose of this is to measure the quality workforce or manpower pool of the aspiring workers.
He said that OFWs have been supporting country’s’ economic growth for so long, that’s why he’s happy to come up with this kind of idea that can really help his constituents. Aside from this, he also notices that there are no investors in their municipality that can give locals jobs.
"Our overseas contract workers (OCW) who are also known as "Mga Buhay na Bayani" have been fuelling the country's economic growth for so many years now and that's the main reason why we are highly supportive and happy that we are now embarking on this unique program," Cuerpo said.
"We have also noted that there are no big investors in our municipality to generate local jobs so we are helping them find jobs abroad instead," he said. "And I'm positive that if we can generate as many OCWs from Montalban our town will become more developed economically."
Though the help of One-Stop Public Service Center (OPSC), which offers the needed services such as processing of authenticated NSO-birth and marriage certificates; NBI clearance; and passport processing on Jan. 21, applicants won’t find it hard to comply with the necessary documents to work abroad.
Mayor Cuerpos’ innovative and progressive views slowly transformed the sleepy town of Montalban into a highly-developed municipality.
