How Lucky She Is! Pinay DH Becomes NY Scholar
Jan 24, 2015
Most Filipino choose to become overseas Filipino workers or OFWs and be a household service worker. This is because of the great demand for them abroad, and the qualifications are not hard to meet since most do not require degree holders. Pinay domestic helper Xyza Cruz Bacani is one of the many OFWs abroad. She inherited the overseas job from her mother, who also served her employer for 20 years. But Xyza is different from the other domestic helpers working abroad. Recently, she’s just lucky enough to be chosen as one of the Human Rights Fellow for 2015 by Magnum Foundation.
Magnum Foundation “champions in-depth, independent documentary photography that fosters empathy, engagement, and positive social change.”
Bacani was not randomly selected. She was chosen because of her photography, capturing the image of life in Hong Kong, of which she had become famous. The Pinay DH will be a scholar of New York University's Tisch School for the Arts and had the chance to have a formal education.
