DFA doubles assistance fund for OFWs in 2014
Dec 19, 2013
The proposed budget for 2014 for assisting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) will be doubled, that is according to DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario.
The DFA Secretary said that for 2014, they plan to allocate another Php 150 million "assistance to nationals", thus bringing the budget to Php 300 million. A huge amount of this budget will be spent for OFWs seeking repatriation.
Despite this, though, complaints and reports of OFWs not being able to go home from their employers are rampant. Del Rosario said that officials from their department still need to go on negotiations with foreign employers of OFWs before they can be finally repatriated.
From 2011 to date, the DFA has already assisted around 15,000 OFWs who seeks repatriation from countries in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Libya.
