Survey Says Egypt is World's Worst Arab Country for Women
Dec 18, 2013
A poll conducted by Thomson-Reuters Corporation about women's rights reveals that Egypt is the worst country among the Arab countries for women.
The poll is divided into six different categories where women can play a vital role, such as "Women in Politics", "Women in the Society," "Women in the Economy,", "Reproductive Rights," and "Violence Against Women." Twenty-two countries, those who had signed and ratified the UN Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), were involved in the poll; including Egypt which ratified the CEDAW in 1981.
Poll results show that Egypt ranks worst in the following:
- highest rate of sexual harassment;
- lowest number of women who have government position; and
- risk of being criminally convicted of apostasy or turning their back on their faith.
Egypt is followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen in the worst's list.
Meanwhile, the Comoro Island topped the list, where the survey revealed that women in the country are awarded the settlement after a divorce and women occupy 20% of the current Comoros government cabinet.
