POEA Issues Deployment Ban in Yemen
Dec 11, 2013
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) releases a resolution stopping the deployment of newly-hired and re-hired OFWs to Yemen after the terrorist bombing that occured in the Yemeni Defense Ministry complex.
The resolution is set to be "effective immediately", following the bomb attack by the Al-Qaeda terrorist group in the Yemeni defense ministry last December 5. The incident forced the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to raise the crisis alert level in the country to alert level number 3, where one Filipino doctor and 6 medical workers were among the victims left dead. Twenty-nine OFWs are also injured during the attack.
Under alert level 3, overseas FIlipino workers can be repatriated at government's expense and any travel to the country, regardless of the purpose of travel, are advised to be deferred.
There are more than 2,000 Filipinos working in Yemen, mostly in the medical and construction industry, based on the government's recent estimate.
