Filipino Domestic Helpers Exempted from Visa Restrictions in Hong Kong
Nov 18, 2013
Filipinos who are to be employed as domestic helpers in Hong Kong should worry no more as they are not part of the proposed law that restricts Filipino travelers from entering the city without a visa.
Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said in a statement that covering the domestic employees in the visa-requirement sanction will be met with opposition both by the employer and the recruitment agency.
The proposition requiring a visa upon entry of Filipinos travelers to Hong Kong was due to the Philippine government's refusal to release a formal public apology for the hostage crisis that occured in 2010 where eight Hong Kong nationals were killed.
Secretary Baldoz said that this exemption still makes Hong Kong a good labor market for domestic workers, where majority of the Filipino workers are receiveing regular salary increase.
Hong Kong is one of the two Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of the People's Republic of China (the other one being Macau), and is an overseas employment spot for Filipinos.
