EU Ambassador: 2 Million Jobs Available for Migrants in Europe
Jul 7, 2013
Two million jobs are available for migrants in Europe and that includes overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). This is according to the Ambassador of the European Union (EU), Guy Ledoux who said this during a workshop on migration policies at the Asian Institute of Management on Monday as posted in the GMA News Online site.
Ledoux said that even if Europe is currently facing unemployment and economy problems, there are many job openings in the industries of engineering, information technology, health, sales and finance. Countries in Europe need migrant workers because of their rapidly aging populations.
He said, “Even as we fight unemployment there are around two million job vacancies across the EU in the fields of health, ICT, engineering, sales, and finance. While emigration is not the only answer to fill skill gaps, it is certainly part of a common solution supportive of the EU's economic growth strategy.”
The POEA Chief, Hans Leo Cacdac told GMA News Online, “The demand for OFWs is clear. The challenge is to translate demand into access and action. Private sector stakeholders and/or government offices in the Philippines and EU, at bilateral or multilateral levels, need to commit labor market potential into fruition.”
Cacdac reminded Filipinos who wish to work in Europe to always deal with recruitment agencies with valid license from POEA to avoid being a victim of illegal recruitment.
