Weekend in Saudi is Now Friday & Saturday
Jun 25, 2013
The rest days of workers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia including overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) would now be Friday and Saturday. This is after the decision of the Saudi government to move the previous Thursday–Friday weekend to Friday and Saturday.
The change in the weekend schedule is done so the oil-rich country can better serve its economy and "international commitments."
The new weekend schedule will be implemented in ministries and government departments in the coming month while schools and universities will adapt it in the next academic year.
The Friday-Saturday weekend is also implemented in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates. The Saudi government is the last country in the Gulf Cooperation Council to adapt the weekend schedule that is closer to the usual schedule around the world.
A royal decree states that the change would "reduce the negative repercussions on economic and financial activity in the kingdom and make up for lost economic opportunities."
The clergymen in Saudi which are under the very conservative school of Islam, Wahhabi initially protested this decision because Saturday is the holy day for Jews.
