PGMA Predicts Rise in Employment
Anamer Menguito, Sep 19, 2003
Last September 17, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo expressed her confidence that the country’s employment rate will take a turn for the better late this year. She warned, however, that any more political conflicts could further delay improvement.
From the end of April’s 11.2% rate, July saw a 1.5% increase in unemployment. Ms. Macapagal believes that more jobs have been restored since the cessation of the El Niño.
"We are also determined to strike up more investments in the industrial and services sectors as economic activities pick up towards year-end," the president said.
She also believes that the country’s "syndrome of destabilization and excessive politicking” must stop in order to improve investments.
The Macapagal administration has recently come under fire due to the failed mutiny last July 27 calling for her resignation, and some opposition legislators’ accusations that her husband and brother-in-law were guilty of corruption.
