Deployment of OFWs to Bahrain, Libya and Yemen Temporarily suspended
Feb 23, 2011
As of this writing, no overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will be allowed to go to three Middle Eastern countries to work. The government recently suspended the recruitment and deployment of OFWs to Bahrain, Yemen and Libya because of the violent protests happening in the countries mentioned.
The secretary of the Labor Department, Rosalinda Baldoz, said in a statement that appeared in the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) website. "I have ordered the suspension of the processing and deployment of [overseas Filipino workers/OFWs] to Libya, Bahrain, and Yemen.”
To help OFWs that are currently in the said countries, Baldoz said that the government allotted Php25 milliion for the repatriation of OFWs in Libya. Many people have reportedly been killed and wounded because of the rallies and demonstrations being held in Libya to put an end to the long reign of Muammar Gaddafi.
Baldoz also informed that licensed recruitment agencies have also offered their assistance in case the repatriation of OFWs in Libya becomes necessary.
She said, “The [licensed recruitment agencies/LRAs] have also assured the DOLE that in the event of a relocation, evacuation, or repatriation, they are ready to cooperate and assist the government. They will submit to the DOLE the names and gender of their OFWs in Libya and their exact workplaces. They also assured the DOLE that they are willing to re-deploy OFWs from Libya to be dislocated to countries where they have employers." Aside from deployment suspension, there is also an ongoing travel advisory to Bahrain, Yemen and Libya.
