Employers in Malta Prefers Filipino Seafarers and Caregivers
Jan 4, 2011
According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) secretary, Rosalinda Baldoz, Malta expressed desire to hire Filipino workers specifically Filipino seamen, caregivers and service industry workers.
Baldoz cited a report made by Mustaffa, the Labor Attaché that is assigned in Tripoli Nasser. According to Baldoz, Mustaffa said that in his visit to the city of Valleta, the capital of Malta, to meet with the Filipino community he saw that the prospect of hiring more Filipino workers there is high.
Apparently, employers in Malta love to hire Filipino caregivers because they are efficient and love their work. The Labor Attaché also spoke with Filipino caregivers in Malta and learned that most are happy with their current job and plans to stay because of the high salary they are getting. Malta is a prime tourist destination in Europe.
He said, "Malta’s minimum wage is 620 Euro ($820) and Filipino workers there receive not less than this minimum wage amount. Besides, Filipino workers in Malta are allowed to do part-time jobs after eight hours of regular work."
One downside though is that there is no Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Malta so Baldoz reminded jobseekers to be careful when applying for work in Malta. She said jobseekers should first check with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) the authenticity of the recruiters, employers and recruitment agencies they are dealing with and if there is a valid job order that would require them to undergo legal application and deployment processes.
Baldoz said, "There is no Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Malta. It is under the jurisdiction of our POLO in Libya and it is our POLO in Tripoli which will verify employment contracts for Malta. Go to POEA first, before you entertain any job offer from Malta," Baldoz said.
