Global Assistance Center Launched for OFWs
Oct 12, 2004
In pursuit of OFW welfare, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration ( OWWA) will launch an operations center (OP Center) that allows the government to provide assistance to Overseas Filipino Workers around the world.
Labor Secretary Pat Sto. Tomas announced last Tuesday in a press statement that this OP Center in Pasay City is in line with the President’s thrust of making the OFW welfare as well as their families a priority of the government.
The OPCenter's main functions will be to coordinate requests for assistance from regional units to overseas welfare officers, follow up action on OFW cases, and link up with concerned government and private organizations to ensure assistance and services to distressed OFWs.
The OP Center will assist and monitor OFW safety in coordination with various Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) around the world using the Internet and modern equipment. Aside from that, the OP Center will also give attention to events involving their families back in the Philippines at the regional and provincial levels in coordination with OWWA regional units.
"Different time zones across the oceans will no longer be a hindrance in the delivery of services to OFWs and their families," Sto. Tomas added.
Sto. Tomas added that an OWWA order outlined the functions, personnel and activities of the said OP Center. The order provides that the OP Center will operate the Text OWWA services and the agency's 24-hour hotlines which the OFWs, their families, sectors and the public may access, respectively, at 0917 TXTOWWA , and at hotline nos. 551-66-41/551-15-60 , and 833-OWWA (6992) .
OWWA will assign three duty officers to man the facility round-the-clock with the assistance of a five-person support staff in three eight-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
