OFW Advisory
No Entry for Undocumented Filipino Workers in Syria and Lebanon
Sep 6, 2004
The Philippines is now asking two countries, Lebanon and Syria to deny undocumented Filipino workers entry in their territories. The Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary released this statement last week.
This advisory was issued after several reports of Filipina maids reportedly abused and later on dying in the hands of their employers. Hera Olandres, the Filipina maid who jumped to her death just last month, is the latest victim of sexual abuse from this country.
According to Jose Brillantes of DFA’s office of the undersecretary for migrant workers said DFA Undersecretary Rafael Seguis has been sent out to forge agreements that also sought to stop abuse on Filipina maids. Brillantes also said that his office considers a ban of Filipina maids going to Lebanon and Syria although they are skeptic of its efficiency.
Take Iraq for example, many Filipinos are wishing for this ban to be lifted so they can work in that country. “Our fellow Filipinos will continue to go despite clear and present danger in their destination.” Brillantes said
Brillantes, on the other hand, praises the Jordanian government for having a “Special Working Contract” to non Jordanian domestic helpers. The Jordanian special working contract includes right to life insurance, medical care, rest days, repatriation upon expiration of contract and treatment in compliance with human rights norm.
