Larry D. Pineda: Found His Haven in Riyadh
Jul 29, 2009
Larry Pineda doesn’t have a degree to be proud of; he just finished a vocational course but that did not stop his determination to go and try his luck out of the country. Other people underestimate his skills and qualification and he wanted to prove to them that they are wrong in judging him. He also wants to improve his status in life even if he was already an orphan then.
Back in their province, Larry had been employed in various jobs. He had experienced working in a piggery, in construction and as a messenger. One person noticed Larry’s determination and willingness to learn, that he offered to teach him how to operate a scanner. Fortunately, Larry is a fast learner that the person who taught him said he is ready to work abroad.
Larry applied for a Scanner Operator position overseas and considers himself lucky when he passed the interview and practical exam of the employer. He encountered a problem though when his medical exam result showed a lump in his neck. He was almost considered unfit to work abroad but his foreign employer intervened for his papers to be cleared because he was impressed with Larry’s work and wants to hire him.
Larry said his employer, Mr.Mubarak Al-Ghanem, is a very good man. When he arrived in Riyadh, his employer immediately had his lump in the neck examined. Upon the doctor’s advice, the lump in the neck was left as it is because it won’t harm his body or interfere with his work.
During Larry’s free time, his employer sends him to a high tech computer school so he can enhance his skills. He also allows him to use the computers in their office so he can learn graphic computer designs.
Larry arrived in Riyadh in January of 1993 and until now; he is still with the same company. His employer fondly calls him a joker because he is able to learn fast and does a good job in whatever position the company gave him. Because of this, some of his workers envy him. But Larry chose to ignore them and just concentrate on doing his job well. He just spends his spare time to further improve his skills.
It is also n Riyadh that Larry met his wife, Ma. Cecelia Jardinico who is a former neighbor and schoolmate in San Blas Academy Payao, Binalbagan Negros Occidental. He did not see her for eleven years before they met in Riyadh so it seems that they are really destined for each other. Larry can say that he is happy and contented with his job and the life he found in Riyadh as he is able to adjust well to the culture of Saudi.
This is Larry’s message to OFWs all over the world: First, to have true faith in only one God, matutong magpakumbaba sa lahat ng bagay, marunong makisama at mag learn more sa mga trabaho at huwag kainggitan ang mga kapwa OFW. Hindi hadlang ang hirap sa buhay kung ikaw ay matutong magsikap, makakamtan rin ang mga pangarap dahan dahan.
