Rosalia S. Bajardo: Domestic Helper Turned Supervisor
Apr 30, 2009
As a single mother, Rosalia or Rose of Negros Occidental finds it difficult to make both ends meet with what she’s earning here in the Philippines. For this reason, the promise of a higher salary out of the country prompted her to try her luck abroad. An old lady who introduced herself as a recruiter helped Rose find an employer in Jordan. With the condition that her salary will be deducted for three months as payment for her placement fee, she arrived in Jordan in 1998. Unfortunately, Rose suffered a lot of hardships with her first employer. She believes this is what most female domestic helpers in Jordan experience. Her first employer was a woman who physically and verbally abused her. The maltreatment was just too much for Rose that it came to a point that she almost killed her employer. She was thankful that God did not allow her to reach that point. It was a blessing when the husband of her employer talked to her professionally. Rose took this opportunity to relay to the husband all the abuses that she experienced from his wife. She pleaded to be allowed to find another employer and her male employer granted her permission. She also demanded to be given a day off because for one year and nine months of working, she wasn’t given any day to rest. Soon, Rose found a job near the place of her previous employer. This is where she would work from year 2000 to 2003. She then went back to the Philippines for a short vacation and upon her return to Jordan, a great opportunity welcomed her. She was offered a job at a Swiss hotel company in Jordan and she stayed in that company for five years. She resigned in the middle of 2008 because another Sweden company offered her a much better job. Rose currently supervises a department store owned by the company. She is now able to meet and deal with different kinds of people and cultures. Rose is truly happy with her present job because she feels the respect of people around her. Rose said that she got promoted as a supervisor because her employer is confident that she can do the job better than anyone else. She was nervous to accept the offer at first because she feels she doesn’t deserve it. Reflecting on her life and her past experiences, Rose cannot imagine how she was able to surpass all the trials she had to go through. Rose thinks that she was able to stay strong because of her only daughter who is now 14 years old. She had spent ten years of her life abroad so she missed the growing up years of her daughter. Her daughter had always been her source of inspiration, the one who gave her strength and hope. According to Rose, it is in Jordan where she realized that if you know how to respect yourself, you will get respect from others as well. You also have to learn how to demand proper treatment and to complain when you feel that you are being abused already. There is no room and time to wallow in self pity. People in Jordan will never know that they have already caused you harm unless you say so.
