No Hiring of Hotel and Other Skilled Workers in UK
Apr 14, 2009
Filipino hotel workers as well as those whose occupation belong to the low skilled category can no longer be accepted to enter United Kingdom (UK) for employment purposes.
According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), UK is not accepting low skilled foreign workers. The Labor Secretary, Marianito Roque said, “At present, most of the available semi-skilled, and low-skilled jobs in the UK are no longer open to non-Europeans, particularly in hotels, restaurants, food catering, retail business, construction and manufacturing.”
A report from Jaina Rasul Jr, Philippine Labor Attache in London said that as of the moment, UK is only granting work visas to highly skilled professional foreign workers.
In lieu with this report, Roque issued a reminder for all aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) against fake job offers in UK that can are said to be proliferating on the internet.
Applicants are offered these non-existent job offers in UK via email which may look legitimate at first because it is complete with scanned appointment letters, work confirmation and employment contracts from their supposed employers in UK. There Instructions on how and what travel agencies, immigration firms, and solicitors in UK should one contact for their visas and employment permits to be processed are also included.
Unsuspecting applicants, lured by the attractive job offer are then asked to pay for the processing of their documents by remitting a certain amount.
These fake job offers have enticed not just applicants but recruitment agencies as well that they agreed to post the job openings for their manpower pooling.
The Labor Secretary provide details, “The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in London has recorded more than 200 emails from job applicants and recruitment agencies in the country requesting for verification of the legality of the job offers they received through the internet.”
The job offers are eventually found to be clearly fake, deceptive and illegal. Application for a UK Visa should be done personally and should be filed at the UK Application Centre of the British Embassy in Manila.
Roque emphasized, “Travel agencies, immigration consultants, recruitment firms, solicitors or barristers, and other agents in the UK are not authorized to act as sponsor of applicants and neither can they process nor apply for working visas in the UK in behalf of the applicants.”
The new immigration policy in UK that uses a points-based system does not require work permits to visa applicants.
“This means that the UK Border Agency or immigration office no longer issues work permits for entry visa purposes,” Roque added.
The old scheme was replaced by the sponsorship system. Instead of the work permit, employers in UK apply for a sponsorship license from the UK Border Agency. Legitimate UK employers can then send the certificate of sponsorship to their hired foreign workers. This is a requirement for online visa application at the British embassy in manila.
