OFW Advisory
Warning Against OFW Scam in Cyprus
Jul 12, 2004
The Philippine Embassy in Cyprus issued an advisory for OFWs in Cyprus or bound to Cyprus. There is a scam that urges OFWs to run away from his/her current employer with a promise of a higher job pay in the next employer. Where a new job is arranged for the OFW, money is collected from the new employer and the OFW herself
This has been discovered as a significant increase in the number of Filipino runaways has been reported to the Embassy in Israel by manpower agencies for the past two months. Cypriot Emigration officials duly verified this information. The runaways stay at St. Joseph Social Center in Nicosia. Letters of release are worked out from former employers and a new job is given to the OFW.
Upon questioning, reasons for running away were not serious and could have been easily resolved between the OFW and the employer. Possible reasons for this is sabotage to the economic interests of the Philippines in Cyprus and to use OFWs in Cyprus as unwitting tools in a scam to extract money from employers.
This scam is highly condemned and punishment is promised for whomever, whether Cypriot or Filipino, is responsible for this. It is instigated by people whose motivation is to make money out of the transaction and where the abandonment of work was precipitated by false promises and pretenses.
It is best advised that if an issue looms between you and the employer, and if it does not involve an immediate threat to the life and safety of the OFW, a discussion and an open forum can help pave the way for a harmonious working relationship. An OFW will always have a place to run to in case things don’t go well with the current employer.
They can turn to their manpower agency. Manpower agencies are duty-bound to assist the OFWs they have brought into Cyprus. Our Honorary Consul in Tel-Aviv whose jurisdiction includes Cyprus, Antonio C. Modena, has a legal obligation to help an OFW in distress. Their office is located at 13th Floor, Textile Center Building, 2 Kaufman Street,Tel-Aviv, Israel,68012. Lastly, there are Filipino community associations in Cyprus who can also provide some form of shelter and legal assistance.
OFWs are reminded to keep the good reputation of Filipinos in Cyprus clean. As much as possible, any event that can lead to the prejudice of Filipino workers is avoided. The promise of a higher pay may be attractive does not work in the interests of the Filipino community in general. You are being lured by people who have only their interests in mind, into abandoning your employer-and endangering their lives and safety sometimes in the process.
