The Legal Ways to Get Hired as an OFW
Aug 17, 2015
Have plans to work as an Overseas Filipino Worker? Do you know how you can get hired for a job abroad? If not, this is for you.
As a newbie in the overseas job application process, you must know that there are three legal ways of getting hired for an overseas job, and these are through any of the following:
Through recruitment agencies licensed by POEA. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has the power to approve and accredit a license to recruit of a recruitment agency. Recruitment or employment agencies are private offices that can be categorized as:
Land-based agencies- licensed by POEA to recruit workers for land-based jobs on behalf of a foreign principal/employer.
An ordinary applicant can now check if he or she is dealing with a legal, licensed and POEA-compliant land-based agency online through the POEA website itself. Also, if applying online, make sure to send application only through credible websites, such as Workabroad.ph.
Manning agencies- are licensed agencies that recruit seafarers to man/board an international ship or cargo and other maritime vessels. Just like land-based agencies, manning agencies shoulf also be accredited by POEA to be able to legally recruit Filipino workers for overseas deployment.
Government to government hiring. Also known as POEA's Government Placement Branch or GPB, this mode of hiring Filipino workers where the government of the Philippines, through a bilateral agreement with another country may help recruit Filipino workers through the POEA's Government Placement Branch.
Name-hiring. For ordinary Filipinos, name-hiring occurs when a Filipino is able to secure a job abroad without the intervention or participation of a recruitment agency. This also includes the following:
- being hired for an overseas employment as authorized by Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and processed by POEA; and
- being hired by international organizations, by diplomatic corps.
