Feb 19, 2013
To warn Filipino jobseekers and to stop a fraudulent activity, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) revealed on its site a new email scam that offers fake nanny jobs for a supposed employer in USA.
According to the POEA Chief, Hans Leo J. Cacdac, he received a memorandum from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Washington DC. The labor attaché, Luzviminda Padilla endorsed the case of a Filipino who seek the assistance of POLO in verifying a job offer from a certain Barrister Martin Bishop which is a nanny job for Mrs. Julie Adams of 206 Springfield Avenue, Newark, New Jersey 007114 USA.
In the said job offer, Martin Bishop claimed that he is associated with Macroberts Solicitors based in New Jersey. The poor victim was lured by the job details sent via email that he sent USD276.99 via Western Union to Qunesha Clewis of 1520 Sepulveda Ave., Apt. G, San Bernardino, California.
Upon verification, the POLO found out that the names mentioned in the email- Martin Bishop, Julie Adams, and Qunesha Clewis are just fictitious names.
The labor attaché also cited a case wherein a certain Dr. Mark Balek of New York Hospital offered a nanny job via email to a Filipina. The email recipient remitted USD300 via Western Union to an address in Malaysia.
The POLO was able to contact the real Dr. Balek but his secretary said that it is a scam that has been going on for a while as his boss is not hiring a nanny.
Padilla said that they had asked the help of the Philippine Embassy’s Police Attache to request the FBI to investigate this cyber crime.
